Why buy the Magic V5
- Thin enough to forget it folds. At 8.8mm closed and about 220g, it slips into a shirt pocket like a regular flagship, which was not true of foldables a few years ago.
- Two full-size screens. The 6.43-inch cover display is wide enough for normal typing, so you only open the phone when you want the big 7.95-inch panel for documents or video.
- Proper zoom camera. The 64MP periscope gives 3x optical zoom, which many foldables skip. It helps for event photos, product shots and anything you cannot walk closer to.
- Top-tier speed. The Snapdragon 8 Elite and 16GB of RAM keep several apps open side by side without reloading.
- Better dust and water protection than most folds. IP58/IP59 covers both dust and water, a step up from the water-only IPX8 on the Magic V3.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very slim and light for a book-style foldable | Expensive at KSh 141,499 |
| Bright, full-width cover screen | The crease on the inner screen is still visible at an angle |
| 3x periscope telephoto | No microSD slot |
| 66W wired and 50W wireless charging | Magic V6 is now available for more money |
| IP58/IP59 dust and water rating | Expensive to repair if the inner screen is damaged |

Verdict: The V5 is the better phone in almost every area: a faster chip, a larger battery, a much brighter inner screen and dust protection. The V3 still costs about KSh 28,500 less and remains a capable foldable. If you plan to keep the phone for four years or more, the V5 is the safer choice.
