Why buy the GoPro Max 2
- True 8K 360 video. Both lenses cover the full sphere at 8K and 30fps. Slow motion is available at 5.6K60 and 4K100.
- Frame the shot after filming. Because the footage covers every direction, you choose the angle later in the Quik app.
- Swappable lenses. The glass lenses twist off without tools, so a damaged lens is easier to replace.
- Six microphones and 10-bit colour. The mic array helps audio pick-up, and 10-bit colour in 8K leaves more room for grading.
- 5 m water rating. It is rated for water down to 5 metres, which suits rain, surf and shallow water shoots.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharp 8K 360 footage in good light | Weak image quality in low light |
| Lens swaps need no tools | Condensation can form inside the lens when temperature changes fast |
| Flexible mounting options | Reported to overheat during long recording |
| Simple controls with a touchscreen | Costs more than standard GoPro action cameras |
GoPro Max 2 vs GoPro Hero 13 Action Camera
| Feature | GoPro Max 2 | GoPro Hero 13 |
|---|---|---|
| Price at Avechi | KSh 54,299 | KSh 46,499 |
| Camera type | Dual-lens 360 camera | Single-lens action camera |
| Best for | 360 footage and reframing after the shoot | Standard action footage at a lower price |
Verdict: The Hero 13 costs KSh 7,800 less. If you only need normal action footage, it is the better buy. The Max 2 makes sense when 360 framing is the main reason you shoot.
